Classes are held about once a month, usually Saturday, depending on the number of requests. Four is the minimum and eight is the maximum number of students per class.
Initial License Classes are a minimum of 10 hours in length, not including a short lunch break.
Each person will be required to fire 50 rounds at a silhouette target and acheive a passing score with a .32 caliber or larger Handgun. The course of fire consists of 20 rounds from 3 yards, 20 rounds from 7 yards, and 10 rounds from 15 yards--a score of 175 out of a possible 250 points is required to pass. (Qualifying with a semi-automatic pistol allows a person to carry either a semi-automatic pistol or a revolver, but one who qualifies with a revolver is only allowed to carry a revolver. For that reason, I recommend that each person use a semi-automatic to qualify.) It is not necessary to own your pistol, it can be borrowed.
The cost for an initial CHL class is $100, including classroom instruction, range qualification, passport photos, notary public service, application assistance, and a printed copy of LS-16 Texas Concealed Handgun Laws.
The cost of the initial CHL is $140 for the first 4 years (for veterans and people 60 or older the fee is $70.) Initial applications normally take about 60 days to be processed.
Renewals are for 5 years, and the fee is half that of the initial license. Renewal Classes are a minimum of 4 hours in length. Renewals normally take about 45 days to process.
Texas Department of Public Safety strongly encourages people to apply for a CHL by visiting their Web Site Click Here. The advantages are faster more accurate processing, and that you can pay the application fees with a credit card, complete the affidavits on line, and schedule electronic fingerprinting.
